NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC)
Data Updates
Beginning 10 June 2009, Version 1 AMSR-E data will no longer be available from NSIDC.
Missing Granules for MODIS/Terra Snow Cover Monthly L3 Global 0.05Deg CMG Data Product (MOD10CM).
Reprocessing has begun for AMSR-E Level-3 Land, Sea Ice, and Snow data products.
AMSR/ADEOS-II L2A Global Swath Spatially-Resampled Brightness Temperatures (AA_L2A) Version 1 data are now available from NSIDC.
Both the AMSR-E/Aqua Daily EASE-Grid Brightness Temperatures and AMSR-E/Aqua Daily Global Quarter-Degree Gridded Brightness Temperatures data sets have been updated. This update extends the time series of both data sets to 31 March 2009. The data in this update are still considered Version 3.
Due to system maintenance from Monday, 20 April 2009 through Thursday, 23 April 2009, NSIDC will not receive MODIS data from our data provider.
Data are now available through June 2008 for the DMSP SSM/I Daily and Monthly Polar Gridded Sea Ice Concentrations data set.
NSIDC is pleased to announce that AMSR-E Soil Moisture Validation data have been updated to include all data sets for the Soil Moisture Experiment 2003 (SMEX03) campaign.
Two recent improvements in tiepoints used in the AMSR-E standard sea ice concentration algorithm may result in a relative change in sea ice area and extent for users working with multiple versions of the data.
Beginning 11 March 2009, NSIDC will no longer offer distribution on hard media (CD-ROM, DVD, DLT) for AMSR-E, MODIS, GLAS, or NISE data sets.
On 16 February 2009, NSIDC noticed significant problems with the Near Real-Time (NRT) sea ice product. Upon investigation, the problem was found to be due to an issue with the DMSP F15 SSM/I 22 GHz frequency brightness temperature fields used as inputs into the sea ice algorithm.
Release-29 data for the Laser 2B campaign (17 February 2004 to 21 March 2004) are now available for the following products: GLA01 to GLA05 and GLA07 to GLA11.
Production of MODIS Terra and Aqua snow and sea ice products have resumed, and both Terra and Aqua products are almost caught up.
Due to a hardware failure on 29 December 2008, production of MODIS Terra and Aqua snow and sea ice products have been suspended indefinitely.
ICESat/GLAS Release-29 data for the Laser 1A (20 February 2003 to 21 March 2003) and 1B (21 March 2003 to 29 March 2003) campaigns are now available for the following products: GLA01 to GLA05 and GLA07 to GLA09.
Beginning on 01 December 2008, AMSR-E Level-2 and Level-3 Land products and Level-3 Snow products are Stage 1 validated.
NSIDC has released new ICESat/GLAS data. Release-29 data for the Laser 3J time period (17 February 2008 to 21 March 2008) are available for the following products: GLA01 - GLA09 and GLA12 - GLA15. Release-29 incorporates significant and extensive changes to the atmosphere processing, additions and corrections to the waveform and elevation processing, and the incorporation of new tide models. Learn more about ICESat/GLAS Data collection and release history.
NSIDC would like to inform you that due to intermittent satellite maneuvers throughout the lifetime of Terra and Aqua, some geolocation information in MODIS data is incorrect. Data with erroneous geolocation information are being reprocessed to eliminate data that do not meet specifications. Reprocessing of all affected data is expected to be complete in Spring of 2009.
NSIDC is pleased to announce that the DMSP SSM/I Daily Polar Gridded Brightness Temperatures data set has been updated through June 2008. Data set documentation and FTP data access are available from the data set documentation.
Reprocessing is complete for all AMSR-E/Aqua Level-2B products. Data from 19 June 2002 (the start of the AMSR-E mission) to present are now Version 2, the validated or transitional version of the algorithm.
