Data Updates
The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Version 1 (Collection 1) data sets was retired from the NSIDC DAAC on April 8, 2025. Data from Collection 1 is no longer accessible, but all related documentation will remain available on the data set web page for future reference. We recommend using VIIRS Version 2 (Collection 2) of these data sets.
The NSIDC DAAC provides access to the VIIRS Version 2 (Collection 2) data and documentation at the following location: NSIDC DAAC VIIRS Data Collection.
The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) added 55 data sets from the Icebridge collection to NASA Earthdata Cloud on 8 April 2025. Earthdata Cloud is NASA’s archive of Earth observations, hosted in Amazon Web Services (AWS). While these data sets will continue to be available via their current URLs and workflows, these legacy access methods will be retired soon. Therefore, users are encouraged to update their direct download workflows, including any data download scripts, to use the new Earthdata Cloud HTTPS location after 8 April 2025.

ATLAS/ICESat-2 L3A Along Track Coastal and Nearshore Bathymetry, Version 1 is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set contains global along-track coastal and nearshore bathymetry, consisting of refraction-corrected seafloor and sea surface heights (orthometric and ellipsoidal heights and instantaneous depths), as well as associated uncertainties. The data are derived from ATLAS/ICESat-2 L2A Global Geolocated Photon Data (ATL03).

Version 1.1 of Near Real-Time MODIS/Terra L3 Global Daily 500m SIN Grid Snow Cover, Grain Size, and Dust Radiative Forcing is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set contains the following parameters: snow fraction, snow grain size, vegetation fraction, rock fraction, ice fraction, shade fraction, deltavis, radiative forcing, and optical snow grain size. Version 1.1 data are forward processing and will be updated once a day.
The Near Real-time SMAP L2 Radiometer Half-Orbit 36 km EASE-Grid Soil Moisture, Version 107 data set, accessible through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has been experiencing a data outage since 13 March 2025. The project team is investigating the cause of the outage and actively working on resuming operations. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.
The DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Daily Polar Gridded Brightness Temperatures, Version 6 data set, accessible through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has been updated through 5 Jan 2025. This data set provides daily gridded brightness temperatures derived from passive microwave sensors and distributed in a polar stereographic projection.
An issue was discovered with SNPP/JPSS1 VIIRS Collection 2 data beginning 2 March 2025 and lasting through 6 March 2025. These files have since been reprocessed and replaced with corrected files at the NASA NSIDC DAAC. Users should use these corrected files and replace any files downloaded last week from the affected time period.

The SnowEx23 Oct22 Laser Snow Microstructure Specific Surface Area Low-snow, Version 1 data set is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set reports vertical profiles of snow reflectance and specific surface area collected as part of the NASA SnowEx 2023 Alaska field campaign. Measurements were taken on 24 October 2022 from three snow pits located within the Upper Kuparuk Toolik field site on the northern Alaska coastal plain.
The SMOS-Based SMAP L2 Radiometer Half-Orbit 9 km EASE-Grid Soil Moisture, Version 1 and SMOS/SMAP L3 Radiometer 9 km EASE-Grid Soil Moisture, Version 1 are now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). These data sets contain integrated brightness temperature observations from both satellites.
The Near Real-time SMAP L1B Radiometer Half-Orbit Time-Ordered Brightness Temperatures, Version 105 and Near Real-time SMAP L2 Radiometer Half-Orbit 36 km EASE-Grid Soil Moisture, Version 107 data sets, accessible through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), have been experiencing a data outage since 14 February 2025. The project team is investigating the cause of the outage and actively working on resuming operations. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.
The SnowEx23 Apr23 AVIRIS-NG Surface Spectral Reflectance, Version 1 data set is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set contains surface reflectance data collected from three boreal forest study sites around Fairbanks, Alaska as part of the NASA SnowEx 2023 field campaign. Temporal coverage spans from 7 April 2023 to 5 May 2023.
The Antarctic files from both the ATLAS/ICESat-2 L3B Gridded Antarctic and Arctic Land Ice Height, Version 4 and ATLAS/ICESat-2 L3B Gridded Antarctic and Arctic Land Ice Height Change, Version 4 data sets, available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), have been corrected and replaced in response to a discovered error. The Arctic region files were unaffected.
