Data Updates
The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Version 1 (Collection 1) snow and sea ice data sets will cease forward processing on June 17, 2024. Although Version 1 data will remain available for download for several months, NSIDC strongly encourages users to transition to VIIRS Version 2 (Collection 2) prior to the 17th.
The IceBridge ARES L1B Geolocated Radar Echo Strength Profiles, Version 1, and IceBridge UAF L1B HF Geolocated Radar Echo Strength Profiles, Version 1 data sets, available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), have been updated. Previously unavailable files have been added as a result of processing efforts by the Data Authors.
The GLIMS Glacier Database, Version 1 data set, available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has been updated. This update includes new outlines for several glaciers in Alaska, Washington, Greenland, and New Zealand. Additionally, a number of glaciers in Washington and Wyoming are now classified as extinct.
The SMAP Level 4 data sets, available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), were reprocessed from 1 Nov 2023 through the present after an issue was discovered with the IMERG-Late precipitation input after the GPM orbit boost on 7-8 November 2023. The reprocessed data files have the SVID (science version ID) Vv7031 (the L4 SM products) and Vv7041 (the L4 carbon product) and now use the NOAA Climate Prediction Center "Unified" (CPCU) precipitation inputs instead of IMERG-Late precipitation inputs.
The MODIS/Terra Global Annual 0.01Deg CMG Snow Cover Climatology (NSIDC-0791), Version 1 data set, accessible through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has been updated from a Basic to a Standard Level of Service, which means more documentation and support options are now available. The Near Real-Time MODIS/Terra L3 Global Daily 500m SIN Grid Snow Cover, Grain Size, and Dust Radiative Forcing, Version 1 data set is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set represents an updated version of the MODIS Snow Covered Area and Grain-size (MODSCAG) and MODIS Dust Radiative Forcing in Snow (MODDRF) data sets previously produced by the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). ICESat-2 Derived Sea Ice Melt Pond Characteristics from the Density-Dimension Algorithm, Version 3, is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data provides locations and depths of melt ponds in the Multi-Year Arctic Sea Ice Region (MYASIR), calculated from ATLAS/ICESat-2 L2A Global Geolocated Photon Data (ATL03), Version 5 using an autoadaptive algorithm. The temporal range is 4 June 2020 to 28 August 2020.
High Mountain Asia 30m and 8m Flood Geomorphic Potential, Version 1 is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set contains Flood Geomorphic Potential (FGP) at 30 m resolution for the High Mountain Asia region and 8 m resolution over Nepal.
The SnowEx23 University of Wyoming Ground Penetrating Radar, Version 1 data set is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set contains the results of ground-penetrating radar surveys conducted at the Arctic Coastal Plain site and the Upper Kuparuk/Toolik site in northern Alaska during the SnowEx23 field campaign. The MEaSUREs Greenland Image Mosaics from Sentinel-1A and -1B, Version 4 and MEaSUREs Greenland 6 and 12 day Ice Sheet Velocity Mosaics from SAR, Version 2 data sets, available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), have been updated. The temporal coverage for the image mosaics has been extended until 31 January 2024, and the 6 and 12 day velocity mosaics now spans until 19 January 2024.
The MODIS/Terra Global Annual 0.01Deg CMG Snow Cover Climatology (NSIDC-0791), Version 1 data set is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set presents new global snow cover classification regimes derived from the MODIS Terra cloud gap-filled NDSI data, elevation, and temperature climatology inputs. Temporal range spans from1 March 2000 to 31 July 2023.
IceBridge ATM Waveform Derived Snow Effective Grain Radius, Version 1, is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set contains surface grain size estimates of snow and ice derived from waveform measurements from NASA's Airborne Topographic Mapper (ATM) narrow-swath and wide-swath instrumentation. The spatial extent spans the Arctic with the majority of data occurring on the Greenland ice sheet. Temporal coverage spans from 17 July 2017 to 11 September 2019.
The SnowEx20-21 Cameron Pass Derived Snowpack Relative Permittivities and Densities from Ground Penetrating Radar, Version 1 data set is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set contains the results of ground-penetrating radar surveys conducted at Cameron Pass, Colorado during the SnowEx20 campaign.
The data sets ATLAS/ICESat-2 L3B Gridded Antarctic and Arctic Land Ice Height (ATL14), Version 2 and ATLAS/ICESat-2 L3B Gridded Antarctic and Arctic Land Ice Height Change (ATL15), Version 2 will be retired from the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) on 29 April 2024. After this date, access to the data will no longer be available. Data set documentation will remain accessible for future reference.
The ATLAS/ICESat-2 L2A Global Geolocated Photon Data (ATL03), Version 6 data set, the ATLAS/ICESat-2 L2A Normalized Relative Backscatter Profiles (ATL04), Version 6 data set and the higher level products derived from ATL03 and ATL04, available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), will be updated so the entire data set is referenced to ITRF2014.

The Version 1 data will remain available for download, but users are encouraged to transition to VIIRS Version 2. VIIRS Version 2 includes new snow, sea ice, and ice surface temperature data sets from both the NASA/NOAA Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellite and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration-20 (NOAA-20) satellite.
The ATLAS/ICESat-2 L3B Weekly Gridded Atmosphere (ATL16) and ATLAS/ICESat-2 L3B Monthly Gridded Atmosphere (ATL17), Version 4 data sets will be retired from the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) on 4 April 2024. After this date, access to the data will no longer be available. Data set documentation will remain accessible for future reference.
The Bootstrap Sea Ice Concentrations from Nimbus-7 SMMR and DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS, Version 4 data set, accessible through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has been updated to include new data through 30 September 2023. This data set consists of daily and monthly sea ice concentrations derived from brightness temperature measurements. This data set is available for the north and south polar regions, with a temporal coverage extending back to 1 November 1978.
The SnowEx23 Laser Snow Microstructure Specific Surface Area Snow-off Data, Version 1 data set is now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). This data set contains vertical profiles of snow reflectance and specific surface area (SSA) from the Fairbanks region of central Alaska and the North Slope region of the northern Alaska coastal plain, collected as part of the NASA SnowEx 2023 field campaign. Temporal coverage spans from 17 O
