Analysis - Sea Ice Today

Despite cool temperatures over most of the Arctic Ocean in January, Arctic sea ice extent continued to track below normal. By the end of January, ice extent dropped below the extent observed in January 2007.

From December 2009 to March 2010, NSIDC Lead Scientist and Antarctic expert Ted Scambos will travel to the Larsen Ice Shelf region in Antarctica to study the effect of ice shelf collapse on Antarctic glaciers.

With few exceptions, glaciers around the world have retreated over the last century. Some ice caps, glaciers, and shelves have disappeared altogether. Many more are retreating so rapidly that they may vanish within decades.
