User Notice: Retiring ATLAS/ICESat-2 L3B Monthly Gridded Dynamic Ocean Topography (ATL19), Version 1
The ATLAS/ICESat-2 L3B Monthly Gridded Dynamic Ocean Topography (ATL19), Version 1 data set, will be retired from the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) on 28 October 2022.
The NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) has added 34 data sets from the Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite-2 / Advanced Topographic Laser Altimeter System (ICESat-2/ATLAS) and Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation / Geoscience Laser Altimeter System (ICEsat/GLAS) satellite missions to NASA Earthdata Cloud.
The SnowEx20-21 QSI Lidar DEM 0.5m UTM Grid, Version 1, SnowEx20-21 QSI Lidar Snow Depth 0.5m UTM Grid, Version 1, and SnowEx20-21 QSI Lidar Vegetation Height 0.5m UTM Grid, Version 1 data sets are now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC).
New versions for the MEaSUREs Greenland Annual/Quarterly/Monthly Ice Sheet Velocity Mosaics from SAR and Landsat and the MEaSUREs Greenland 6 and 12 day Ice Sheet Velocity Mosaics from SAR data sets are now available through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC).
The Bootstrap Sea Ice Concentrations from Nimbus-7 SMMR and DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS, Version 3 data set, accessible through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has been updated to include new data through 31 May 2022.
Images of Antarctic Ice Shelves, Version 2 (NSIDC-0102), accessible through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has been updated to include MODIS imagery through July 2022.
The Terra satellite is scheduled to undergo Constellation Exit Maneuvers (CEM) on October 12 and 19, 2022. All science data acquisition will remain suspended for a period of about 10 days as MODIS will remain in a CEM configuration mode until instruments are brought back to their nominal status. Following the last maneuver on October 19, an outgas procedure will be performed and all things are expected to stabilize within 48 hours after that. Consequently, there will be a Terra MODIS data outage starting on October 10 and extending through October 19.
The MEaSUREs ITS_LIVE Landsat Image-Pair Glacier and Ice Sheet Surface Velocities, Version 1 and MEaSUREs ITS_LIVE Regional Glacier and Ice Sheet Surface Velocities, Version 1 data sets, are now available at the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). These datasets consist of glacier and ice sheet surface velocities generated from Landsat 4, 5, 7, and 8 imagery.
Users of MODIS Terra and Aqua data from the NASA National Snow and Ice Data DAAC should be aware that a Science Mission Directorate (SMD) Request for Information (RFI) was released on September 8, 2022 by the NASA Solicitation and Proposal Integrated Review and Evaluation System (NSPIRES). This RFI seeks input from the science community that will be considered in the development and implementation of a Terra, Aqua, and Aura (T, A, & A) Drifting Orbits workshop planned for later this calendar year.
The Likely Basal Thermal State of the Greenland Ice Sheet data set, accessible through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has been updated to Version 2.
The IceBridge BedMachine Greenland data set, accessible through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has been updated to Version 5.
The Sea Ice Concentrations from Nimbus-7 SMMR and DMSP SSM/I-SSMIS Passive Microwave Data, Version 2 data set is now available from the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC). With Version 2, the data are now provided in NetCDF format. Links to scripts that convert the NetCDF back to the original binary format are available in the data set documentation. The Version 1 data in binary format will remain available until 31 January 2023.
The VIIRS instrument was returned to operational mode on 10 August 2022 and data are now available from 11 August 2022 onward. There may be gaps until the reprocessing is complete and all data lost while the SNPP spacecraft was in safe mode are non-recoverable. This results in a temporal coverage gap from 26 July 2022 through 10 August 2022.
The temporal coverage of the Lagrangian Snow Distributions for Sea-Ice Applications, Version 1 data set, accessible through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has been extended through 31 July 2021.
Version 4 of the ATLAS/ICESat-2 L3B Annual Land Ice Height (ATL11) and ATLAS/ICESat-2 L3A Ocean Surface Height (ATL12) data sets, will be retired from the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC) on 23 September 2022.
On Monday August 8, 2022 the SMAP observatory entered a safe-mode which is designed to maintain its essential functions but stops science data acquisition. The Project team is investigating the cause of the anomaly and actively working on resuming operations and continued science data acquisition. The NSIDC DAAC archive will not have science data products during this period. However, generation of the model-based Level-4 products continues until further notice without SMAP observations.
NOAA@NSIDC is pleased to announce the release of the U.S. National Ice Center Arctic and Antarctic Sea Ice Charts in SIGRID-3 Format, Version 1 data set. This data set contains Arctic and Antarctic-wide sea ice charts that have information on sea ice concentration, stage of development (often called ice type), and form. The charts are produced by the U.S. National Ice Center, with a temporal coverage of 2003 to present, and for most of the record the charts are weekly in frequency.
The Sea Ice Trends and Climatologies from SMMR and SSM/I-SSMIS, Version 3 data set, available from the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has been extended through 31 December 2021. This data set contains sea ice concentrations, ice-covered area, ice persistence, and sea ice extent for the Arctic and Antarctic.
The temporal coverage for the ICESat-2 L4 Monthly Gridded Sea Ice Thickness, Version 2 (IS2SITMOGR4) data set, accessible through the NASA National Snow and Ice Data Center Distributed Active Archive Center (NSIDC DAAC), has been extended
