NSIDC has been notified of an error in AMSR-E sea ice data products that caused valid data in the Southern Hemisphere to be obscured by a land mask. The products and algorithms affected by this error are:
- AMSR-E/Aqua Daily L3 12.5 km Tb, Sea Ice Concentration, and Snow Depth Polar Grids, V14
- AMSR-E/AQUA Daily L3 25 km Tb, Sea Ice Temperature, & Sea Ice Conc. Polar Grids, V14
- AMSR-E/Aqua Daily L3 6.25 km Sea Ice Drift Polar Grids, B03
During the recent V14 algorithm processing, an improved land mask for Antarctica was incorrectly implemented in the AMSR-E 12.5 km and 25 km sea ice products, which caused portions of valid data to be masked between approximately 65° W longitude and 68° E longitude.
The AMSR-E sea ice drift product was also affected by this error since the 12.5 km sea ice data are used as an input. Both the 12.5 km and 25 km sea ice products with the V14 algorithm have been replaced with data using the V12 and V13 algorithm.
The sea ice drift data with the B03 algorithm have been replaced with data using the B01 algorithm. In the meantime, the error is being corrected in the V14 algorithm code, and all data will be reprocessed. We will notify registered data users when reprocessing begins.
